How DogTag works
The chip holds a link — nothing else
Each collar chip is encoded with one short URL like https://www.nfcpet.net/t/AB12CD34. No names, phone numbers or emails are stored on the tag itself: anyone can read an NFC chip's raw contents with a free app, so DogTag keeps personal data off the chip and behind the web page instead.
A finder taps — any phone, no app
iPhone (XS and newer) and Android both read the chip natively and open the pet's profile: photo, name, medical notes, and big call / text buttons for the owner.
The owner gets an email with a map
If the finder taps “Send report”, the pet's GPS position, an optional photo and a message are emailed instantly to the responsible address registered for that chip. The phone shows its normal permission prompt first — sharing is always the finder's choice.
🔒 Why nothing happens “silently” — by design
Customers sometimes ask whether a tag can secretly photograph the person who scans it or quietly pull their location. It can't — and any product claiming it does would be lying or breaking the law:
- NFC chips are passive storage — a scan opens a link; it can't run code on the phone.
- Android 9+ blocks camera access for background apps and Android 12+ lights an indicator whenever any camera is used; iOS is even stricter. Browsers require a visible permission prompt for camera and location.
- Covertly capturing someone's photo or location is non-consensual surveillance — unlawful under the CFAA (US), the Computer Misuse Act (UK) and equivalents worldwide.
DogTag's consent-first flow is what real pet-recovery platforms do — and it converts better too: finders help when the experience is transparent.
